Hearing aid fitting

Hearing aids are provided with the aim of helping your child access important speech and environment sounds, to allow their speech and language and general development to progress. 

We currently fit Behind The Ear (BTE) style hearing aids provided by our hearing aid supplier Phonak.  We fit hearing aids from their NHS range aimed at children. We are proud to offer your child the full range of colours meaning your child can be involved in making choices for their care. 

The type of hearing aid model will depend on the level of your child’s hearing. The below models are shown in Majesty Purple.

Hearing aids usually require an ear-mould, which is a mould taken of the shape of your child’s ear – they can come in different colours or glitters and can have cartoon pictures in them.

If your child is older, we can also offer an open fit style hearing aid, should your child’s hearing meet criteria.

What will happen at my child’s hearing aid fitting?

• We will allow you to ask questions about your child’s assessment appointment
• We may repeat the hearing assessment as it is very important we obtain accurate hearing levels for hearing aid fitting to avoid under or over amplification
• We will program the hearing aid using your child’s hearing test
• We will examine your child’s ears using a special light
• We will ensure the hearing aid fits into your child’s ear/s.
• We will take some measurements of your child’s ear and use this to fine-tune the hearing aids
• We will do some tests to make sure your child can hear with the hearing aids and is happy with the sound, ensuring they are not too loud or quiet
• We will instruct you, and your child if they are older, on how to care for the hearing aid/s
• We will provide you with a hearing aid care kit and batteries
• We will arrange your next appointment for an initial hearing aid review
