What is a FibroScan?
Fibroscan is a quick, non – invasive (which means that it does not break the skin or enter your body) and pain free test that sends ultrasound waves through the liver and detects how stiff (scarred) the liver is.
Unlike the blood test for the liver, fibroscan allows early detection of liver damage. It will help your doctor/nurse understand and monitor the condition of your liver and help them to plan your treatment.
Hospitalisation and sedation are not required and it does not have any potential complications or risks.
Are there any precautions with having a Fibroscan?
Fibroscan is very safe. Fibroscan can be used safely in most people, including pregnant women and people with implantable devices such as a pacemakers or defibrillators.
How do I prepare for the scan?
You will need to stop all food and drink three hours before your scan. You can have small sips of water if needed. You can continue to take any prescribed medication as normal.
You will not need to remove any clothing for the scan, but we will need to expose the right side of your abdomen (tummy). Therefore, we recommend that you wear a top and trousers or a skirt on the day of your test.
What does the scan involve?
- You will lie on your back with your right hand raised behind your head.
- An ultrasound probe will pass over the surface of your skin on the right side of your lower chest/tummy (abdomen).
- A mechanical pulse is generated on the skin surface and an elastic wave is transmitted through the liver.
- The speed of this wave is measured by ultrasound and tells us how stiff or flexible the liver tissue is. Stiffer liver tissue means more severe scarring or fibrosis of the liver.
- The scan will take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
- The results will be sent to the doctor who requested this test.
What happens after the scan?
As soon as the fibroscan is finished you will be able to either go home or return to work.
When will I get the result?
The result will be sent to the doctor who referred you for the fibroscan and he/she will discuss it with you at your next outpatient appointment.
