Stockton nurse, Alyson Thompson, took on 2022’s Great North Run to raise money for North Tees and Hartlepool Together.
Not only was it her first time taking part in the world’s biggest half marathon, it was also Alyson’s first time running.
I always wanted to take on the Great North Run. It was a personal goal I had for a very long time. I knew that I wanted to make a difference to the children that I treat and this opportunity gave me the motivation to push my fitness levels.
An extra bonus was that I am able to see the difference that my money will make on the ward.

Running alongside her colleague, Jade Jefferson, the pair took on the 13.1 mile route from Newcastle to South Shields and raised over £400 for the children’s ward.
Alyson plans to use the money to fund a sensory room for patients and their families to relax and enjoy.
The money will go towards sensory lighting and play equipment, creating a calming environment through outside spaces and communal seating.
“Our patient’s families are always so generous and go out of their way to raise money for us continually. This was my chance to give back to the place I work for and those that we support.
“The best thing about raising money for North Tees and Hartlepool Together is that we’ve all had a loved one that has been cared for by the NHS.
“And you can be specific with your donation, choosing particular wards and departments to donate your money towards.”
Advice for Great North Run participants
Alyson credits Great North Run for giving her the focus and determination to push her fitness levels. Regular runs on familiar routes allowed her to reach goals and celebrate achievements.
My motto is that if I can do it, anyone can do it. I feel healthier than ever and I am still running now. It has become me-time and a space to reflect and unwind from the day.
I truly believe that there’s no better feeling than taking on this challenge for a Trust that has touched all of us in some way, shape or form.
