A Billingham paediatric nurse is set to compete in a fighting competition to raise money for the children he cares for.
Glen Gardiner, 41, is taking on the Ultra MMA (mixed martial arts) charity fight in April 2025. He is raising money for the children’s surgical day unit at the University Hospital of North Tees – where he works as a paediatric staff nurse.
Glen began Thai boxing around 20 years ago – a hobby shared by his daughter Courtney who began just aged three. When Courtney, now 21, showed an in interest in MMA, the pair began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu together. They have continued in the sport ever since.
When Glen saw an advert for the Middlesbrough competition, he was inspired to take part to raise £500 to fund a play and sensory space for children undergoing surgery.
Glen said: “Needing surgery is often a daunting experience for children and we’ve got a lot of complex needs kids in particular who come through the day unit. That’s why I’m raising money to turn an old linen cupboard into a sensory playroom for our young patients who attend for surgery.
“They can often be sat in their rooms, understandably getting a bit agitated or worried. Having this playroom with some sensory equipment would make their experience a little more pleasurable and give them a space to chill out and go play.
“Please dig deep into your pockets and let’s put some smiles on those little kiddies’ faces.”
The children’s surgical day unit provides pre- and post-surgery care for children and young people attending the hospital for day case operations.
Glen begins his formal training in February to compete in the Ultra MMA’s heavyweight division on Saturday 26 April 2025.
