We have taken the difficult decision to reintroduce the mandatory wearing of face masks coverings in patient areas in our hospitals.
This is due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the region.
From Friday 8 July, all staff, patients and visitors will be required to wear face masks to enter a clinical department or ward in:
- University Hospital of North Tees
- University Hospital of Hartlepool
- Peterlee Community Hospital
Karen Sheard, deputy chief nurse, said: “We all hoped we would never have to make this decision.
“COVID-19 remains a serious threat and we cannot and will not compromise the safety of our patients and colleagues.
“On 1 June we had just 11 in-patients with the virus. By June 30, we had 64. The escalating rate of infection is clear.
Patient and colleague safety must be our priority and we ask everyone to do their bit by wearing a mask when visiting our hospitals.
Karen Sheard, deputy chief nurse
In-patients are asked to wear a mask in bed and while away from their bed if this can be tolerated. Out-patients will need to wear masks throughout their consultation/treatment.
Visiting rules
People visiting friends and family will be required to wear a face mask while on the ward.
You must book a visiting appointment by calling 01642 617617 and ask for the ward your loved one is staying on.
