When we learn to communicate there are many skills that develop before talking. These can be the building blocks of communication and can help children to maximise their preferred way of communicating, whether this is verbal or non-verbal.
This course is for education staff who want to help support children who don’t talk, considering their motivation and stage of development. We will look at visual strategies and intervention for supporting communication. Strategies we cover can be applied in day-to-day interactions and activities at school.
The session is delivered by an experienced speech and language therapist and covers:
- The stages of pre-verbal communication development – how a child communicates at each stage and how to support development at each stage
- Intensive interaction stages and strategies
- Visual strategies to support understanding
- Visual strategies to support communication of needs
