Opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, John Dobbin, 1871.
University Hospitals Tees Visual Arts Council, working with local partners, wanted to recognise the importance of the anniversary of the opening of the Stockton to Darlington railway to the town and its inhabitants over the years. This painting and our embroidered panel near the hospitals north wing entrance showcase difference perspectives of the railway. Look out for local events planned to mark the occasion online.
The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened on the 27 September 1825. John Dobbin was commissioned to recreate the opening day for the 50th anniversary of the railway in 1875,
The painting was first exhibited at a Conversazione held in Central Hall, Darlington in 1875.
The artist was a child when the railway opened and painted the scene from memory. It is believed that Dobbin painted himself into the picture as a young boy, seen in the bottom left of the picture, holding a toy ship on a string.
The original painting is owned and displayed by Hopetown Darlington and the Borough Art Collection.
