A TREASURED hospital receptionist from Hartlepool has received royal recognition for more than 35-years of dedicated service to the NHS.
Laurence Herdman, affectionally known as the ‘man behind the desk’ at the University of Hartlepool was invited by His Majesty The King to attend the Kings Garden Party at Holyrood Palace earlier this year.
He was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the NHS and dedication to his patients and colleagues across the University Hospital of Hartlepool, University Hospital of North Tees and wider community.
Laurence who works in the outpatient’s department has spent more than three decades helping people navigate hospital visits, offering reassurance, guidance and a friendly smile to those who need it most.
His exceptional commitment was highlighted in a nomination letter from a member of the public sent to Sir James Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England.
It highlighted Laurence’s warmth, kindness and dedication to make every patient feel valued including those with complex illnesses, mental health conditions, learning difficulties and physical disabilities.
The letter described him as someone who ‘always goes above and way beyond’ and is highly respected by his fellow health professionals and wider patient communities of Stockton and Hartlepool.
The nomination went viral on social media with an outpouring amount of support from patients and residents, many of whom shared their experiences of Laurence’s kindness and compassion.
One patient described him as “an absolute gentleman, kind, caring and very helpful”, while another said: “A wonderful man! He makes everyone feel special!”
Others praised his positivity and dedication, calling him “one in a million”, “a fantastic asset” and ‘worthy of a British Empire Medal.’
Laurence said: “I feel humbled and honoured to have been invited to attend the King’s Garden Party.”I’ve always believed I was simply doing my job, so to receive this recognition is very special.
“The greatest reward has always been helping patients and working alongside fantastic colleagues throughout my career.”
Tracey Anyinsah, centralised outpatient reception team lead said: ” Over his 35-year career, Laurence has become a well-known and highly respected member of the hospital team, recognised for taking time to support patients, particularly those who may be anxious, vulnerable or attending hospital duringdifficult periods in their lives.
“His invitation to the King’s Garden Party is a fitting tribute to a career devoted to caring for others and making a difference to the lives of thousands of patients.”
