Personal wheelchair budget

A personal wheelchair budget (PWB) is money to help you to get a wheelchair.

A personal wheelchair budget (PWB) is money to help you to get a wheelchair.

These budgets usually last for five years. For children, they might last for three years.

How to get a budget

Before you can get a budget, you need to meet with someone from our team. They will talk to you to help to understand what problems you have and what kind of wheelchair you need. They will also explain your choices.

If you want to buy your own wheelchair, we will work out how much money we can give you after your meeting.

You can only get a budget if you need a new wheelchair. If your wheelchair can be fixed with new parts, then we won’t be able to offer a PWB.

You can’t use a PWB to buy new seat cushions or backrests.

Maintenance

Fixing and looking after the wheelchair is free and done by Ross Care.

The wheelchair is from the NHS and still belongs to the NHS.

Top-up option

The wheelchair is from the NHS and still belongs to the NHS.


If you want extra parts e.g. a seat that goes up and down on a powered chair, you will need to pay for them yourself.

You can only pick the extra parts that fit the wheelchair the NHS gives you.

Cost to you

The wheelchair is free. If you want extra parts, you pay for them.

Maintenance

You pay to fix the extra part you chose. Ross Care will do this for you.

Fixing the rest of the wheelchair is free.

Third party option
  • You will be given the cost of the NHS wheelchair to help you buy your own wheelchair.
  • You choose the wheelchair you want from a shop.
  • The shop sends the details to us to check.
  • We pay the shop the cost of the NHS wheelchair. You will pay the rest.
  • You can only buy the same type of wheelchair we agreed to give you.
  • For example if you need a manual wheelchair, you can’t get a powered chair.

Information:

PLEASE NOTE: We can’t give money for wheelchairs bought online. We can only give money if you buy from a mobility shop.

This is so you can try the wheelchair before you buy it. It is best to buy from a shop that offers repairs. Your wheelchair should last as long as the agreement.

If you do not look after it, you may not get a new NHS wheelchair or PWB.

Cost to you

The difference in price between the value of the wheelchair you want and the value of the wheelchair we would provide.

Maintenance

you can get money back for repairs on your wheelchair during your agreement (three or five years).
 
We need an invoice for the repair.


The money is paid straight to the company that fixed your wheelchair.
