What is an ultrasound scan

An ultrasound scan is a test that is done in a hospital to look inside your body. 

 It is like having a photo taken of the inside of your body. 

You may take a carer, friend, or other supporter with you.

When you get here

When you arrive for your ultrasound scan, you will need to give your letter or card to the person at the desk.

Sit in the waiting area

You will need to sit in a waiting area until it is your turn to have your ultrasound scan.

Your name will be called

When it is your turn, you may need to take off your shirt or top and put on a hospital gown.

What will happen

A member of staff will ask you to lie down. They will place the camera on your body. 

Someone in your family, a friend or carer can stay with you, if you want them to.

Getting ready to leave

Once your ultrasound has been done you can get dressed and go home.

Your GP or hospital will let you know the results of your test.
