Gastroenterologists from University Hospitals Tees were pleased to welcome an internationally renowned expert to a specialist endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) workshop – supporting the continuous improvement of hepato-pancreatico biliary services in the region.
Hosted by the hepato-pancreatico biliary (HPB) team, the workshop welcomed Professor Hassan Okasha, professor of internal medicine and hepato-gastroenterology, from Kasr Al-Aini Hospitals in Cairo to present at the endoscopy department within the University Hospital of North Tees.
The workshop brought together HPB consultants and trainees with an interest in endoscopic ultrasound from across University Hospitals Tees and neighbouring NHS trusts throughout the North East. The event provided a valuable opportunity for learning, collaboration and the sharing of best practice to ensure clinicians remain at the forefront of patient care.
During the workshop, Professor Okasha delivered advanced lectures in HPB and oesophago-gastric cancer staging. He also facilitated discussion while colleagues watched EUS cases performed and live-streamed directly to the endoscopy seminar room.
Professor Vikram Mitra, consultant gastroenterologist at University Hospitals Tees, said: “We’re really grateful to Professor Okasha for taking the time within his busy schedule to visit Teesside and to share his expertise while in the UK.
“We’re now looking at ways to utilise the knowledge we acquired to benefit our clinical practice going forward, which will ultimately benefit our patients and the care they receive within our service.
Professor Okasha, who also holds the position of vice president of the Middle-East and North Africa Club of Endoscopic Ultrasound, is an internationally renowned HPB physician with a specialist interest in diagnostic and therapeutic EUS. He is known for being an expert trainer in EUS and has trained numerous HPB physicians within this field in Egypt and across the world.
