NHS surgical experts will talk about the reasons why thousands of people in the UK need revision surgery to remove implants every year – at the first event of its type later this month.
The NHS Implant Analysis Service has invited a range of speakers to talk at its annual conference in Newcastle on Monday 25 November.
The service, run by NTH Solutions (an NHS owned company), want to share meaningful insights on the physical analysis of retrieved implants and how this could be used to improve patient safety.
Tony Nargol, an orthopaedic surgeon at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, performs revision surgery to remove implants.
Speaking ahead of the event, he said: “Each year, around 20,000 people in the UK suffer through painful revision surgery to replace implants for joints such as hip and knee.
“This isn’t just an issue for patients, but for the health service who face additional costs as a result.
“Once surgery is complete, the majority of implants are thrown away. But by studying retrieved joint implants, we can gain crucial information about what leads to implant failure and can improve future surgeries and patient care.”
Sharing learning about retrieved implants
The conference will see insights shared from the physical analysis of retrieved implants.
Mr Nargol added: “Through sharing our learning and expertise, we hope to improve the safety of patients undergoing joint replacement procedures in the future.”
The event will be at the Catalyst Building in Newcastle city centre and will be followed by an evening networking reception at Above Bar, Vermont Hotel.
Speakers will include orthopaedic surgeons, leading academics, legal experts and patients affected by revision surgery. To find out more visit the NHS Implant Analysis Service.
