Staff at University Hospitals Tees are now able to attend their routine breast screening mammograms more easily thanks to new in house drop in appointments designed around busy work schedules.
From March, any woman employed by the NHS organisation who receives their breast screening invitation letter can have their mammogram at a weekly drop in session held every Tuesday from 10.30am to 2pm.
Drop in session
Paula Wood, programme clinical administrator, said: “Some of our colleagues have previously struggled to arrange their mammograms around demanding work patterns, particularly those working on wards or out in the community.
“The new drop in session provides a convenient and consistent timeslot, making it much easier for staff to attend these important screening appointments.”

Breast screening aims to detect breast cancer at an early stage—often before any symptoms are noticeable.
Detecting cancer early gives the best possible chance of successful treatment and can significantly improve outcomes. Attending screening when invited is one of the most effective ways to protect long term breast health.
Self examination
Women should contact their GP if they notice any of the following changes, even if they recently had a mammogram:
- A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
- A change in the size, shape or feel of the breast
- Skin changes such as puckering, dimpling or redness
- Any changes to the nipple (such as inversion, discharge, or rash)
- Persistent discomfort or pain in one breast that is unusual for them
Paula commented: “Most breast changes are not cancer, but it is always important to have them checked as soon as possible. If you have any concerns or notice any changes, please contact your GP straight away.
“Regular self-examination is really important. So is attending your screening appointment. Please take up the offer of the breast screening mammogram when the invite drops through your door.”
