Research teams in Teesside are part of two clinical studies into diabetes – including one to test the risk of its development in babies.
Our research and development service is part of two national trials to improve treatment of those with diabetes.
INGR1D2 is using a screening test to identify the risk of babies developing type 1 diabetes in the first weeks and months of their lives.
ADDRESS-2 (after diagnosis diabetes research support system-2) is investigating the development and progression of type 1 diabetes in children and adults aged one years and older.
INGR1D2
Sharon Gowans is a research midwife and the Trust’s principal investigator for the INGR1D2 study. She said: “In the first few weeks of a baby’s life, checks are carried out for treatable metabolic and hormonal disorders as part of standard screening tests.
“The study is giving the option of another free test – to identify the risk of a child developing type 1 diabetes – from blood already taken as part of the standard tests.
Type 1 diabetes is often only picked up when someone experiences serious symptoms.
“If babies with an increased risk are identified at an early stage, these complications can be prevented.”

ADDRESS-2
ADDRESS-2 is for anyone with type 1 diabetes diagnosed in the last six months or the sibling of someone with it, recruiting volunteers for future research.
This is led at the Trust by consultant paediatrician Ramesh Srinivasan, the principal investigator, along with a dedicated team.
Dawn Egginton is one of the Trust’s paediatric research nurses involved in the study. She said: “ADDRESS-2 has been running for more than ten years, helping to support research involving people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
“By recruiting volunteers, we have the best chance of learning more about type 1 diabetes – from diagnosis to improving treatments in the short and long term health for this patient group.
“As a team we are committed to engaging children, young people and families in research.
