As the summer heats up, University Hospitals Tees is offering some top tips to stay safe during the oncoming heatwave.
Esther Mireku, public health consultant, said: “It’s very tempting to want to get out in the sun but we are urging everyone to be cautious.
“Heatwaves can be very dangerous and can cause serious health risks.
“Some simple actions, like drinking plenty of fluids, wearing high-factor sun cream and keeping out of the midday sun can help us all stay safe.
“Older people, young children and people with long-term health conditions may need help keeping cool, so please check in on your friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.”
The NHS suggests the following advice:
- Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding alcohol.
- Cover up in loose clothing, wear a hat and seek shade.
- The sun is at its hottest from 11am to 3pm – stay out of direct sunlight during this time
- Use at least factor 30 sun cream to all exposed skin, including face, neck and ears, and check it is not past its expiry date
- Apply sun screen about 30 minutes before going out and again just as you are heading out
- Babies should be kept our of direct sunlight
- Use a parasol on a pushchair for shade, not a blanket
- Use factor 50 sun screen on babies over 6 months old
- Keep babies and children well hydrated
- A paddling pool in the shade and a cool bath can help children cope in the heat.
