As the excitement builds for the UEFA Euro 2024, University Hospitals Tees (the group partnership of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) is urging the public to enjoy the games responsibly and to avoid excessive drinking that could lead to preventable injuries.
Major sporting events can see a rise in alcohol-related incidents that put unnecessary strain on emergency services. With the tournament starting on Friday and promising thrilling matches and moments of celebration, it’s important every fan remembers to stay safe and look after themselves and others.
Group chief medical officer Mike Stewart emphasised the importance of keeping the accident and emergency departments available for those who need urgent care.
“We are asking everyone to drink responsibly”
Mike said: “Football matches are exciting and people want to celebrate, especially international matches where one of the home nations is taking to the pitch.
“We want people to have fun but we are asking everyone to drink responsibly. Excessive drinking can lead to accidents and injuries that are entirely avoidable.
“Please help us keep your local accident and emergency departments free for those who need it.”
Mike offers the following tips for a safe and enjoyable tournament:
- Pace yourself – enjoy alcohol in moderation and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
2. Eat before and during drinking – a proper meal can slow the absorption of alcohol.
3. Plan your journey home – if you are watching the match at the pub or at a friend’s, make sure you have a safe way to get home and avoiding drink-driving at all costs.
4. Look after each other – keep an eye on your friends and make sure everyone gets home safely.
Mike commented: “We all hope the home nation teams play well and progress in the competition but no one wants to celebrate with a visit to accident and emergency.”
