We’re looking back on the successes and achievements of NTH Solutions as we celebrate our subsidiary company’s fifth anniversary.
Established in March 2018, NTH Solutions is an innovative estates and facilities management company. It is an LLP subsidiary of our Trust.
Mike Worden has been managing director of NTH Solutions since 2019. He said: “To look back on what we have achieved in the last five years is phenomenal. We are a small company of around 800 staff and yet continue to push the boundaries of innovation and excellence to provide fantastic services and products to not only our Trust, but the wider local and national communities.
“I believe the success of our organisation has been driven by our people. We have the most passionate, caring and committed colleagues I could ever wish to work alongside. I believe our motto of ‘everybody feels like somebody’ is now becoming part of our DNA and ultimately this authenticity is what has driven our success, which not only improves services for our patients but also generates income which is invested directly back in to frontline patient care.
“The achievements we have made together are a clear reflection of our fantastic members of staff who always rise to any challenge and provide excellent service day in day out. As managing director, my main priority is to make NTH Solutions an incredible company to work for and with, where everybody feels like somebody.”
Achievements
Continuous PPE provision during the global Covid-19 pandemic
Our team of procurement and supplies specialists worked relentlessly (and successfully) around the clock, in the environment of a global shortage, to ensure that our colleagues were never short of PPE. Their dedicated work allowed our clinical staff to meet the challenges they faced and best care for our patients.
Reusable PPE
NTH Solutions teamed up with local manufacturers to create our own reusable PPE. This was supplied to other healthcare providers who needed it.
Enhanced oxygen infrastructure
Our estates teams worked hand-in-hand with clinical and operational colleagues to improve the oxygen capabilities of our infrastructure. During the process, patient safety was a top priority.
In the autumn of 2021 the team provided a two-fold increase in the site’s oxygen infrastructure. This doubled our oxygen capacity and allowed the team to prepare for the second wave of our COVID-19 response.
Enhanced A&E facilities
Working closely with our clinical and operational colleagues, the estates team led an ambitious 12-week redesign and enhancement of our Urgent and Emergency Care facilities. The project maintained operational capability in the live site services and in readiness for the pressures of winter.
Additional work involved the remodelling of the day case unit and paediatric day units. Both work streams were completed in February 2021.

Establishment of the NHS Deep Cleaning and Advisory Service
During the pandemic we supported our communities both locally and nationally with their response to COVID-19. Our decontamination team shared their experience and expertise to enhance infection control needs and safety in other organisations.
This led to the creation of the NHS Deep Cleaning and Advisory Service, which is now a national brand and established the UK’s first domestic cleaning course accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health.
Supporting the Ukraine Appeal
After the news of the war in Ukraine the NTH Solutions supplies team worked with the Trust and local community to gather much needed medical supplies and co-ordinated the delivery to war-torn Ukraine.
NHS Deep Cleaning and Advisory Service cleaned at the Commonwealth Games
Last Summer, at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, our team of 300 trained professionals from the NHS Deep Cleaning and Advisory Service managed and provided exceptional cleaning services across high-capacity venues to NHS standards.
Vaccination hub
Our vaccination hub was built to allow our staff and the local community to get their vaccines to protect themselves and our patients this winter.
Continued investment across our hospital sites
The opening of a state of the art respiratory ward at North Tees helped us manage admissions of patients with covid-19 and flu this winter. Local trusts came to see the unit and the benefits it provides.
Around 2,500 fire alarms have been fitted at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, taking the total number to around 5,000. The £1 million fire alarm system upgrade provides coverage to every room on site.
New patient lifts have also been installed at Peterlee hospital.
£1 million made from the Community Kit Bag
NTH Solutions has now surpassed a revenue profit of £1 million from sales of the Community Kit Bag. Reaching these exceptional figures is a huge achievement for the organisation.
Revenue generated from the sale of products by NTH Solutions is reinvested back into frontline patient care.
HSJ and UK Business award finalists
The Community Kit Bag innovation won bronze in the ‘Best Product Development’ category at the UK Business Awards. It was also commended as a finalist in the ‘Primary and Community Care Innovation of the Year’ category at the prestigious Health Service Journal Awards.
The innovation has changed working practices of so many healthcare professionals.

Published articles in global Forbes magazine
The Community Kit Bag and Pathisol Hospital System Trial have gone international. The NTH Solutions team is incredibly proud of these simple yet effective innovations and it is terrific to see such an esteemed publication as Forbes take an interest in the all-important work.
Establishing the NHS Implant Analysis Service
The NHS Implant Analysis Service conducts independent physical analysis of used explanted medical devices and reports on their performance in patients. The focus of this service is to increase patient safety and drive outcome improvements.
