This course has been designed to develop teachers and teaching assistant’s skills to support children with their understanding of language. This session is aimed at supporting children at an early years and key stage 1 level in the classroom.
The training session is delivered by an experienced speech and language therapist and covers:
- Development of attention, listening and understanding of verbal information including ‘key’ information carrying words
- Understanding of different levels of questions from concrete, the here and now, abstract and the how and the why
- The links between language and behaviour management
- How to apply the approach within your planning and whole class teaching
What is the course for?
This course will:
- Offer an overview of typical development in understanding spoken language.
- Give early years and KS1 teachers and teaching assistants a structured way to identify and support children experiencing a difficulty understanding verbal information.
- Support you to consider strategies to use to teach and support the understanding of language within the school environment. These can be applied flexibly as part of whole class teaching as well as with small groups or individual children.
How long is this course?
Usually one session of two and a half hours
Who should attend?
Early Years or KS1 Primary teachers and teaching assistants looking to enhance their practice in supporting children with difficulties understanding language.
Some teachers or teaching assistants supporting children with SEN may also benefit if
children they support have skills at this level.
Which children will it help?
This course should facilitate supporting children in the early years and KS1 including those
with delayed understanding of language or developmental language disorders.
Can we offer it as INSET?
Yes, this course can be delivered a whole team session. Please contact us if you are interested in having the training delivered in your setting.
