Two doctors have been given regional recognition for their service to medicine and their dedication to developing other clinical staff.
Rahim Khan, a specialist anaesthetist, and Dawn Noble, an associate specialist at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, were presented with awards at the annual regional SAS (Specialist, Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors) Conference.
In a series of excellence awards presented to doctors, Rahim was recognised with the regional SAS doctor or the year for outstanding leadership and management skills, while Dawn was recognised as the SAS Doctor of the year with the teaching and training award.
Rahim has worked at the Trust for 16 years in anaesthetics and critical care while also performing various teaching and training roles with medical students.
He said: “I am so proud to have been recognised like this.
“I’m the SAS tutor for the Trust. Apart from my role as an anaesthetist, my other roles include being an appraiser, educational and clinical supervisor, examiner for Newcastle and Sunderland Medical University students and I teach specialty trainees, foundation trainees and nurses and paramedics. I also teach on advanced life support courses, difficult airway days and transfer training courses.”

Dawn works in both elderly care and undergraduate departments and has been at the Trust for 24 years. Her clinical interest is Parkinson’s disease and she has developed a significant role in the education and training of medical students.
She a lead for Newcastle University and course lead to three separate rotations, as well as being an appraiser, academic mentor clinical supervisor, honorary lecturer and exam lead and examiner.
She said: “To be recognised with an award like this is a really special moment – I am passionate about educating and developing future doctors to ultimately improve the care given to our patients.
“The award and the response both Rahim and I have had from our colleagues after this recognition is overwhelming and we both want to thank our colleagues for their support.”
Both Rahim and Dawn were presented with their awards by professor Namita Kumar, regional postgraduate dean for NHS England, Education North East and Yorkshire at the event in Durham.
