A big thank you to Julie and Alan Tyerman for their amazing £200 donation to the breast unit at the University Hospital of North Tees.
Julie Tyerman, from Norton, decided to forgo gifts for her 70th birthday and instead, raised funds for the unit following the care she received after her own breast cancer treatment over eight years ago.
Julie said: “We really love ballroom dancing and are part of a small, but really lovely group led by Sue and Mike Dibden at the Norton Cricket Club.
“We asked the group if they would help us to fundraise for a breast charity for my birthday instead of getting a gift, and they have all been generous in helping us to raise some money.
“I knew I wanted to give to something very close to my heart, rather than one of the larger national charities and decided that donating to the unit and the amazing team that helped me through my own diagnosis and treatment eight years ago.
“I’m really thankful to my friends in my ballroom group, who helped with our fundraising efforts so that we were able to give something back.”
Breast care nurse, Gail Fleming and colleagues accepted the donation to the breast unit from the couple.
Gail said: “I was a part of Julie’s treatment years ago and it is lovely to see her looking so well and to have been able to give her a warm-welcome back to the unit today.
“We’re all really thrilled that Julie and Alan have chosen to donate to our unit and we’re really appreciative that their generous donation will now go on to help support future patients in our service.”
Donations like Julie and Alan’s mean so much to our staff and patients, by helping the breast unit continue to provide the very best care and support for patients.
Every gift helps our nurses and doctors go that extra mile – from enabling us to buy state or the equipment, to providing those special touches and moments of support – they truly make a difference to patients and their families whilst going through diagnosis and treatment.
