A breast nurse in Teesside has become the first in the region to complete an advanced qualification – giving her more responsibilities over patients.
Melissa Mckie, advanced breast nurse practitioner at the University Hospital of North Tees, has achieved the advanced breast examination course at masters level.
The course, which she completed at the Nottingham Breast Institute in partnership with Birmingham City University, aims to develop clinical and communication skills and build knowledge and expertise in breast examination.
Melissa has worked in the breast service for a year having previously worked as a bowel screening practitioner, as well as before then in the day case unit as a sister helping prepare patients for their surgery.
Caring for patients a real privilege
She said: “A year ago, I started on a new learning journey in the breast unit. After months of dedication and hard work, I’m proud I have successfully completed this qualification.
“This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible support of the breast team and all of those who guided and encouraged me along the way.
“I am very grateful for the journey so far and excited for what lies ahead in improving patient care.”
Describing her journey so far in the breast service, Melissa added: “The role has been challenging – having that responsibility to help the women we care for is a real privilege.
“Having empathy and understanding for each and every one of our patients is so important – and our team really does that.”
