If you are going to have an operation, we want to make sure you are fit and healthy and able to have an anaesthetic.
We will help reduce your worries and concerns and will carry out some simple checks including:
- blood pressure and pulse check
- your weight and height
- full assessment of your physical fitness
If appropriate further investigations may be carried out which could include:
- ECG (electrocardiography – a tracing of your heart)
- blood test
- MRSA screening
- COVID-19 swab
You will be asked to complete a health care questionnaire and asked questions about your lifestyle, for example whether you smoke or drink and some questions about your general health.
You may be referred to see an anaesthetist if you have a number of health problems.
You will receive an information leaflet in the post explaining what happens when you come into hospital and we will give you an idea of when you will be home so you can make arrangements.
You will be referred directly to us from our outpatient clinic or by a consultant.
Clinics
We run two anaesthetic clinics each week at each hospital site.
