Information for patients
This leaflet can be made available in other formats including large print, CD and Braille and in languages other than English, upon request.
You may have fractured (broken) one of the small bones in your wrist called the ‘scaphoid’.
A crack or other injury may not show up on first set of X-rays you have.
It is important for us to detect these injuries as they can lead to problems if not treated and healed properly.
To look at the wrist in more detail, an MRI scan might be arranged, but this will be done after the Orthopaedic specialist team have discussed your case.
You will have been provided with a splint to wear to support your wrist and help to relieve any pain.
Follow-up
The orthopaedic department will have been informed about your injury and you should have been provided with an appointment in two weeks’ time to be reviewed. If you have not received an appointment please contact the fracture clinic on the numbers mentioned further in the leaflet.
If everything at your appointment is ok and you do not need any further treatment then you will be discharged.
If you still have pain after your appointment you might need some further X-rays, or you may be referred for an MRI scan.
After the scan, your treatment plan will be discussed with you.
