Information for patients
This leaflet can be made available in other formats including large print, CD and Braille and in languages other than English, upon request.
Please read this information leaflet carefully in order to use the service appropriately and more importantly know when more immediate action is needed.
What is Open Access?
Open Access means that children have the right to access medical advice and treatment without going to their GP.
Why is my child getting Open Access?
Your child has been given Open Access for 24 hours following their discharge from the Paediatric Unit in case you are worried when you are at home. This will be discussed with you before your child has been discharged.
If I am concerned about my child what should I do?
If you are concerned or you notice any of the following, such as, your child:
- Has irregular breathing, pauses in breathing, or is breathing faster than usual.
- Is lethargic on handling or is floppy.
- Is excessively (very) sleepy.
- Has any changes to their normal skin colouring.
- Is not feeding or drinking.
- Is having a seizure (fit).
- Is crying inconsolably.
- Needs more oxygen than usual.
You must ring 999 immediately for an ambulance.
This will bring your child to the Emergency Department where they will be assessed (checked).
If you have a copy of your child’s discharge letter please bring this to the hospital with you along with any medicines they are currently taking.
If your child is generally unwell but alert and of normal colour, and is breathing regularly, you can discuss their condition by dialling 111 for advice.
If you are concerned about your child you should contact Children’s and Young Person’s Emergency Department and speak to a member of staff. See contact numbers below.
This is so your child’s needs can be assessed by a member of staff over the telephone and appropriate advice can be given to you and, if required arrangements made for your child’s arrival on to the ward.
You must not turn up before contacting the Children’s and Young Person’s Emergency Department.
