The first in a series of new skills development days were held this month as part of the Trust’s T Level health industry work placement offer.
Trust education leads and allied health professional (AHP) colleagues from the healthy lives care group played host to 10 students from Hartlepool Sixth Form College on Friday 15 December – with students undertaking training sessions throughout the day.
Sessions were interactive and aligned to the T Level health pathway – the day offered students the opportunity to develop soft skills including, communication, problem solving, teamwork and leadership and students also took part in some clinically-focussed practical activities.
Education lead Emma Davies said: “These kind of skills days are a great way to bring together learning from both the classroom and work placements. It provides students with the opportunity to continue to develop and consolidate all their knowledge and skills so far.
“Feedback so far has been really positive. Students were particularly complimentary about the practical activities – especially the chance to learn CPR.
“It was lovely to hear that they really enjoyed being in our new clinical skills lab (which opened back in September) and their feedback will help us to shape the development days going forward.”
Positive feedback from students had seen them commenting that the skills day had left them feeling ‘excited, motivated and positive’ about a future in healthcare.
Students began the day with a team building activity facilitated by Trust education lead and careers coordinator. With further sessions including anatomy, hands on assessing for signs of deterioration, how to conduct A-E assessment, recording observations, calculating NEWS2 scores and performing CPR.
Emma added: “It was really fantastic to see the level of passion the students had for their future careers within healthcare. We are looking forward to hosting more T level students from the Hartlepool College of Further Education and Stockton Riverside in the New Year and to continue to train our workforce of the future.”
