The balance organ, also known as the vestibular system is located in the inner ear. Signals from the vestibular system are sent to the brain along with information from the eyes, muscles and joints to helps us maintain our balance and know which position our body is in.
What is dizziness?
Dizziness can be described in a variety of ways including; off balance, lightheaded or faint, floating, spinning sensation (vertigo).
What affects balance?
As there are a number of systems contributing to help maintain balance, there are many reasons why your balance can be affected
- Inner ear infections
- Aging
- Disease
- Vestibular disorders
- Injury
- Neck problems
- Certain drugs
If you are experiencing dizziness or balance issues we advise you talk to your GP, depending on the type and cause of dizziness you are experiencing you might be referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant for investigation.
If it is likely your symptoms are caused by the vestibular organ within the inner ear you may be referred to the balance team for an assessment.
