Putting staff on the right track

A HEALTH trust is putting the tracks in place to help its staff on the way to becoming the best leaders they can be.

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has created an online guide to develop staff’s leadership skills.

The trust’s organisation development team have mapped out six different routes staff can take.

Each track focuses on parts of a person’s behaviour and skills – such as emotional intelligence, innovation, time management, problem solving, conflict management and managing people.

Louise Samuel, organisation development practitioner, said: “We need effective leaders at every level so that we are providing the best care we can to our patients.

“There was a need to develop a leadership journey through which staff can assess their abilities and skills and have a clear understanding of the journey they need to take to meet their goals.

“The track is for all staff. Our leaders, at every level, must be able to support and successfully deliver the trust’s vision and strategic objectives, while also being role models and promoting our values.

“The leadership track has been developed to be used in a variety of ways – there is a structure to each track.

“In each section there are a variety of suggested courses which staff can attend – some are run in-house, while others are hosted in partnership with the North East Leadership Academy (NELA) or in an e-learning format.”

Each stop on the track provides information about the course, who should attend, if there are any financial implications, provides a direct link to booking and also offers additional information.

And plans are being developed to add more stops to the track in the coming months.
