Peer supporters wanted to help breastfeeding mums

Are you a breastfeeding mum or a mum who has breast fed and would like to support new mums to breastfeed their babies?

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is looking for women to join its 12 week peer supporter course.

The course will start in January 2016 and will be held on a Tuesday morning at The Star Children’s Centre on Bath Lane, Stockton. Each session lasts two hours and there are crèche facilities available.

At the end of the course you will join our group of peer support volunteer and achieve a One Awards qualification.

Infant feeding lead at the trust Ros Nunn said: “Our peer supporters are fantastic. It’s all about giving women an informed choice so they know the benefits of breast feeding.

“Often when mums wish they could have breast fed for longer, we find that they just needed a bit more support or somebody to say you’re doing really well, keep going and you’ll get there in the end.

“Supporting mums to breastfeed is essential, especially support from their partners, family and friends. The peer supporters are very enthusiastic and very willing to give their time and experience to help mothers breast feed for longer.

“The peer support groups are great because they offer mums a really informal way of accessing local support.

“We’re not here to tell women what to do but to work with them to make the choices that they find most comfortable.”
