If you’ve enjoyed a sandwich from our patient or retail menu, it’s more than likely from our local suppliers On a Roll Sandwich Company who create our Pick of the Pantry range.
On a Roll was set up in 2007 by former chef James Stoddart who saw a gap in the market for quality, innovative sandwiches.
After developing his Pick of the Pantry range with wife Helen, the team that then consisted of 17 members of staff moved to a 12,000 sq ft factory on Riverside Park in Middlesbrough.
Now manufacturing over seven million sandwiches a year from its new purpose-built factory, the company has still managed to keep food at its heart.
James said: “The major selling point for our brand is that we’re real foodies and nothing leaves our factory until it reaches our high standards.
“We make sure filling levels exceed regulation, that we purchase the best quality ingredients and that all our products are put out in suitable packaging that will allow them to be enjoyed with minimum wastage.
“We have a great partnership with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, it’s great to work with organisations who are committed to bringing the highest quality food to their patients and visitors.
“Colin Chapman, Head of Catering especially, who works non-stop to ensure his retail consumers and patients are receiving the best products.”
Colin, who had tried a number of suppliers in the past, was delighted when he found the innovative manufacturer right on his doorstep.
He said: “In 2009 when we were looking to fill the contract there was a lot of press about a sustainable economy and keeping money local. This is why we decided to look within the North East for a supplier.
“Although price will always play a part, what I’m really looking for is quality and nutritional value, those are the most important things for our patients and customers.
“On a Roll delivered all of that, they were exactly what we had been looking for and when they began producing salads for us a few years later, we were blown away, they were of such high quality, I would expect them to be from a high-street food chain.”
