Family visit emergency care to donate in man’s memory

THE family of a patient who sadly died following sudden illness in the trust’s emergency department visited staff to thank them for the care and support they provided and make a donation.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Mr Cook asked anyone attending his funeral to make a donation.

This, along with donations from his colleagues at Virgin – helped raised almost £500 for the emergency department at the University Hospital of North Tees.

John’s ex-wife Valerie and his son Stephen visited the department to personally thank staff and to present them with the funds.

Valerie said: “From the moment John arrived at hospital, the family are  grateful for everything the staff did for him”

“Their dedication and commitment to do everything they could for John was incredible. They were brilliant. I don’t envy what they do – when they suffer the loss of a patient they are affected by that as well”

“Myself and the whole family wanted to give something back to show our appreciation for everything they did for John”

Viv Priestley, Urgent and Emergency Care Operational Manager, said: “It was a lovely to be able to meet both Valerie and Stephen to personally thank them for the family’s contribution in memory of John”

“It was nice to talk about John and for us to learn more about his life and his love for his family and his grandson.

“As an emergency department it isn’t often we receive donations from relatives or patients, so this was something which really touched staff.

“Thank you again to all of John’s family, friends and colleagues who donated – these funds will go directly back into improving patient care.”
