We audit compliance with hand hygiene in each ward and department every month. Our staff observe each other during patient care and give feedback when opportunities for hand hygiene have been missed. Our trust score for hand hygiene has been consistently over 90% during the last year and we aim to improve that further.
The trust has now been participating in the National Patient Safety Agency cleanyourhands campaign since January 2005 and all clinical areas are taking part including our community services teams. Posters reminding staff to clean their hands should be evident in both of our hospitals and in our community premises. We would encourage patients and visitors to ask our staff if their hands are clean before they perform any aspect of care. It is “OK to ask”. Staff should be cleaning their hands either by using the alcohol gel available or by washing their hands with soap and water.
